A NEW Council service that aims to find a second life for unwanted goods raised almost £100 for charity in its first day.

The ‘New to Me’ re-use service was launched at Bowling Back Lane Household Waste Recycling Centre on Friday.

The service sees goods left at recycling centres, but which are still useful, gathered together. People can buy one of these items in exchange for a £1 donation to the Lord Mayor’s appeal.

On the first day £99 was raised.

The goods on offer include items of furniture to ornaments, pots, pans, cutlery, dvds, books and cds.

If the new pilot service proves a success, it will continue in the New Year, when the Council will consider providing a similar service at one of the other recycling centres in the district.

The re-use container will be supervised at all times and situated away from the main disposal skips.

Councillor Sarah Ferriby, Bradford Council’s executive member for Healthy People and Places, said: “This new service adds an extra dimension to our household waste recycling centres.

“Not only will waste be recycled, there will also be an opportunity for unwanted, good quality goods to be re-used and loved again in a new home.

“This simple green solution will not only offer our residents the opportunity to acquire small household items, it will also provide extra funds for the Lord Mayor’s charity Appeal, as well as being good for the environment.”
