DINERS will be able to watch films while tucking into a Burrito if plans for a drive thru take away in Odsal are approved tomorrow.

Mexican fast food giant Taco Bell is awaiting a decision by a Council planning panel to see if a new branch can be built at the junction of Odsal Road and Halifax Road.

Franchisee group QFM, which submitted the plans for the take away, has already been given a licence to sell alcohol at the planned business, as well as to screen films at the venue.

Bradford Council’s Bradford Area Planning Panel will make a decision on the planning application at a meeting tomorrow, and planning officers have recommended the business be given the go ahead.

QFM was behind the recent opening of a KFC at the same site, and the plans will see the Taco Bell built on an unused portion of land at the back of the site - formerly a police station and snooker hall.

The KFC plan was refused by Bradford Council in 2014 over concerns about increased traffic at the site and how lighting from the building and car park might effect neighbouring homes.

But the company appealed the decision, and a government planning inspector overturned the Council’s refusal, saying the authority had acted “unreasonably” in refusing the plans.

They argued that Councillors had offered no evidence that the take away would lead to dangerous traffic around the site.

The Council was then ordered to pay the costs of the appeal, leaving the taxpayer with a £7,300 bill.

The applicants say the new Taco Bell will create 12 jobs, and would be the one of the first drive thru’s for the brand in Yorkshire. The planned opening hours are between 7am and 11pm.

The only Taco Bell in the district is a stall in The Broadway Shopping Centre.

At tomorrow’s meeting, members will hear that there have been five objections to the plans, and one letter of support.

A letter from the Odsal Area Residents’ Association says the area has suffered a rise in noise, traffic and anti social behaviour since the opening of the KFC, and that another take away will “exacerbate a bad situation.”

Another objector has written to the Council to say: “The existing two-storey KFC is a monstrosity.”

The planning report responds: “The KFC development was approved on appeal and is not the subject of this

application so cannot be taken into consideration.”

Others raise concerns about the value of their property falling if the take away is approved, but the report says this is not a planning matter.

The Taco Bell would be build on a car park area on the site, and would see the number of spaces around the KFC fall from 68 to 49. However, highways officers say the level of parking will be adequate for the two take aways.

Describing the planned building, the planning report says: “The design of the building provides an appropriate response to the existing site and features some architectural detailing and visual interest.”

If the plans are given the go ahead the licence will allow the Taco Bell to sell alcohol from 10am to 11pm, and screen films until 11pm.

The panel meets in City Hall at 10am.
