THIS weekend's severe weather warnings were met by a mammoth response by gritters across Yorkshire.
On Friday, a previous weather warning for ice was increased to amber, with freezing rain set to cause "very dangerous travelling conditions".
It said injuries from slipping and danger to life on icy surfaces are likely, with pavements likely to become "instantly impassable because of the sudden formation of black ice".
Authorities across the region responded.
Bradford Council sent gritters out throughout much of last week in anticipation of the drop in temperatures, covering around 300 miles of roads on Sunday, December 9.
Crews patrolled on Friday evening and all "Priority 1" routes and path routes were gritted on Saturday ready for the impending amber warning which lasted from 10am on Saturday until 6am on Sunday.
Highways England geared up for the weather by spreading over 500 tonnes of salt across Yorkshire's motorways within 24 hours.
In a tweet, it said: "Be prepared. Remember leave our trucks room to work. They are slow moving and will often be in the centre lanes."
