MORE than 30 firefighters were scrambled over fears of a fire in the former Poundworld store on Regent Street.
Crews from Swindon and Oxfordshire were sent to the call at around 9.40am on Friday morning. It turned out to be a false alarm.
A spokeswoman for Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service said: “Fire control took a 999 call to reports of alarms sounding and a smell of smoke, with the possibility of people inside the building.
“Crews conducted investigations and checked the building and confirmed there was no fire and this was a false alarm with good intent.”
Firefighters from Swindon, Stratton, Westlea, Royal Wootton Bassett, Faringdon and Wantage fire stations were sent to the suspected fire.
