A teenager has appeared at the Old Bailey accused of stabbing a 15-year-old boy to death.

The 17-year-old defendant, who cannot be identified, allegedly attacked Jay Hughes outside a chicken shop in Bellingham on November 1.

Jay was taken to a south London hospital, where he was pronounced dead the same evening.

A post-mortem examination found he had died from a single stab wound to the heart.

The defendant, from Penge, appeared in court from custody via video-link from Cookham Wood Young Offenders' Institution in Rochester, Kent.

He is charged with murder and two counts of possessing an offensive weapon - a large Rambo knife and a second blade.

During the hearing, the boy spoke to confirm his identity and English nationality.

Judge Anne Molyneux QC set a plea hearing for March 1 and a provisional trial from June 3.

The trial is expected to last three weeks.

The boy gave the judge two thumbs-up when she explained what would happen and remanded him in custody.
