THE northbound carriageway of the A1(M) was closed between Bowburn and Carrville on Friday morning following an accident.

The incident happened between Junction 61, A688 Tursdale Road (Bowburn), and Junction 62, A690 (Carrville).

Officers closed the carriageway at around 6.30am to recover the vehicles and clear debris from the road.

One lane was reopened just after 7am but one lane remained closed due to extensive damage to the central reservation.

A further lane was then closed on the southbound carriageway for repairs to the central reservation to take place.

All lanes have now been reopened.

Highways England tweeted at 7.10am: "Traffic officers and Durham Police are now releasing traffic in lane 1. A lane 2 closure will remain due to the severity of the damage to the central reservation. Our teams are working hard at scene to repair the damage."
