A drink and rage fuelled man who attacked his former partner with a wrenched off door, a dog chain and a metal chair has been sentenced to 21 months imprisonment, suspended for two years.

Daniel Glynn subjected the woman to a sustained assault at his home while she was visiting Bradford for a family party.

Glynn, 36, of Broadstone Way, Holme Wood, Bradford, pleaded guilty to breaching a restraining order and assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

Bradford Crown Court heard on Monday that the woman encouraged the breach of the restraining order by staying with Glynn overnight after the birthday celebration on February 23.

Glynn, who had been drinking, knocked her on to the sofa at 3pm the following day and repeatedly punched her with his clenched fist while accusing her of seeing another man.

He pulled the sitting room door off its hinges and struck her with it then set about her with a chain dog lead before whacking her up to four times on the back with a metal chair and kicking her.

She was treated in hospital for cuts to her mouth, lumps and bumps to her head and bruising and scratches, the court was told.

When the police called at Glynn’s home there were signs of a struggle. The fish tank was smashed, with water and fish on the floor, furniture was overturned and the door was off its hinges.

Glynn had a previous conviction for battery on the same woman.

It was said in mitigation that he had a good job as a ground worker. He very much regretted the incident and had taken positive steps to deal with his drinking.

The volatile relationship was at an end and the woman’s injuries were “relatively minor.”

Judge Neil Davey QC said the attack was “fuelled by drink and rage.”

Glynn had since taken big steps to tackle the alcohol problem that had blighted his life.

He was ordered to do 150 hours of unpaid work and attend accredited programmes to help him build better relationships and address his use of alcohol.
