A MAN had his car seized last night after being stopped on the M62 motorway driving with no insurance.

A tweet posted at 9pm yesterday by the West Yorkshire Police Roads Policing Unit said the driver, who was in a silver BMW, "thought he was covered to drive on the previous owner's insurance policy".

The car was seized from the side of the motorway, and the driver was reported for a traffic offence.

The RPU said the driver will also likely lose his licence under the new driver scheme.

It tweeted: "Driver recently bought the car and thought he was covered to drive on the previous owners insurance policy. Not the case.

"Vehicle seized and TOR given to the driver. Licence likely to be revoked under the new driver scheme."

The police can give a driver a fixed penalty fine of £300 and six penalty points for driving with no insurance, and if the case goes to court, a motorist could be disqualified from driving and receive an unlimited fine.

If a new driver accrues six penalty points within two years of passing their test, including points gained on a provisional licence carried over, they face having their licence revoked. They would then have to resit their theory and practical exams to get their licence back.
