A NEWLY-CREATED volunteer group is taking action around the Leeds & Liverpool Canal in Saltaire, aiming to enhance the UNESCO World Heritage site.

Saltaire Towpath Taskforce, set up by waterways and wellbeing charity Canal & River Trust in September, is already working at a variety of locations between Bingley and Shipley, undertaking all sorts of tasks to enhance the canal environment.

Now, they are embarking on an ambitious project to create a series of canal-side gardens along a four-mile stretch over the next three years.

Incorporating nature habitats, sculptures, murals and interpretation boards, the gardens will become home to wildlife and a great place for boaters, walkers, cyclists and runners to stop and enjoy nature on their travels.

On Friday the volunteers started the project at Dowley Gap Locks in Bingley, where they were planting hedges thanks to funding from players of People’s Postcode Lottery. The mix of bushes – blackthorn, hazel, hawthorn, guelder rose and crab apple – will provide essential food and shelter for local wildlife, as well as providing added interest for people passing by.

Nick Stead, operative at the Canal & River Trust who is leading the volunteer group, said: “It’s been great to have so many people support the local community by joining our volunteer group and they’ve already done lots of work, so we’re excited to take on this garden project that will benefit wildlife, locals and visitors for many years to come.

“Thousands of people enjoy spending time on or by the canal here each year as it helps them feel happier and healthier, and we’re really proud to show them how the Leeds & Liverpool Canal is at the heart of the area’s heritage and daily life.

“Our thanks go to players of People’s Postcode Lottery for supporting us in getting the garden series underway with these first plantings, and we hope to gain the support of with many local people, organisations and businesses to make these gardens bloom over the coming months.”

Becca Dent, volunteer development coordinator at the Trust, said: "Saltaire is a beautiful village with the canal at its heart and we know that hundreds of people spend time on or by the water every month, so the efforts of our dedicated volunteers will bring real benefits to everyone who lives nearby or visits the area.

"Volunteering on your local canal is a fantastic way to spend some time outdoors and support your community, and it also gives you the chance to learn new skills and make new friends, so come along and get involved."

Saltaire Towpath Taskforce meets on the first Friday of every month between 10am and 1pm, at various waterfront locations in the Saltaire area.

Tasks can include painting locks, clearing vegetation, maintaining towpaths, and picking litter. All tools and equipment are provided, along with expert support and friendly company.
