LOCAL people have expressed outrage after the wrong kind of Golf came to a Bradford sports club on Sunday afternoon.

Many were horrified to witness a black Volkswagen Golf TDI performing "doughnuts" across the course at Baildon Golf Club at about 3:30pm on Sunday.

One man who witnessed the vandalism, who did not wish to be named, said he saw the scene unfolding while walking his dog on Baildon Moor.

He said that one person was filming the car as it drove around the golf course, starting on the par 3 second hole before moving onto the green of the 16th hole, also a par 3.

The 2nd hole at Baildon Golf Club is described as its "signature" on the club's website, and is one that is "talked about after many a round" and sees golfers play from an elevated cliff-top tee.

Leanne Sedgwick, 33, of Shipley said: "I saw them driving on the golf course and doing doughnuts.

"Mud was flying about as it's been really wet up there and the damage was quite bad when I passed."

West Yorkshire Police confirmed they were called at 3:28pm to reports of the car being driven around the golf course.

A police spokesperson said: "While the caller was on the phone the driver has driven off. The owner of the car has been spoken to."

Police said they have also spoken to Baildon Golf Club secretary Paul Weatherill and are waiting for a response from the club about the damages sustained.

The club has three tournaments scheduled this week, with one taking place in the early hours of today.

The "Christmas Fuddle" - a club competition - is set to run from 7:00am this morning until 1:00pm in the afternoon.

Another two competitions are booked in for Wednesday and Saturday respectively.

Richard Jones, club captain, states on the Baildon Golf Club website: "It is a course that remains in superb condition all year round and whilst demanding, is usually fair and enjoyable. It is widely regarded as a true and comprehensive test of ones golfing skills."

But, it remains to be seen if any lasting damage has been sustained from the incident.

Councillor Valerie Townend (Baildon, Conservative) said this kind of behaviour is appalling, particularly considering the amount of time and money it takes in the upkeep of a golf course.

She added: " I hope the perpetrators are found and get the necessary punishment because of obviously how serious the offence is. I abhor the idea of it - it's terrible.

"Membership on golf courses generally is in decline, so for someone to do this is unacceptable."
