GYM goers have been left frustrated after a fitness centre in Shipley closed without warning earlier this month and has since been placed into liquidation.

The Workouts Health Club in Shipley shut up shop earlier this month unexpectedly, with some gym-goers expressing anger they had not been given any prior warning the gym would be closing.

Some also expressed frustration that they had paid a full year’s gym membership - more than £200 - only for the gym to close days later.

The gym was run by Paul Royston, who is the owner of Workouts Health Club Ltd, and he also runs a fitness centre by the same name in Keighley, which is still open.

The gym in Wharf Street is now in the hands of insolvency company Walsh Taylor after going into administration, with Walsh Taylor handling the liquidation of the Shipley gym.

One member, who asked not to be named, hit out at the owner of Workouts Health Club Shipley.

He said: “The gym has gone bust leaving many members out of pocket.

“Many paid subs on November 12, only for liquidators Walsh Taylor to close the business on November 14.

“Many also paid subs for a year, losing up to £240 after recently been encouraged to take up long-term memberships.”

Another member said: “One day you work hard in the gym the next day there is no gym.

“Whatever happened to the Workouts gym in Shipley, closed unexpectedly. No communication no warning.

“What sort of practise is take cash membership for a year up front - £200 - and then close for good next week.

“No apologies no explanation. Just removed equipment and locked.”

A sign was put up on the entrance to the gym which read: “Dear members, due to unforeseen circumstances, the gym at Shipley is closed.

“We will contact you shortly to provide a further update.”

A spokesperson for Walsh Taylor said: “It is just the gym in Shipley that we are in control of.

“Any members from Shipley that wish to use the facilities in Keighley are free to do so.

“We are in contact with all members directly.”

The Telegraph & Argus attempted to contact Paul Royston for comment, but he could not be reached.

The closure of Workouts is the latest to hit this area of Shipley.

Colin Appleyard car dealership, which had a showroom in the town, moved to a new location in Canal Road in July, and just yesterday fellow car dealership JCT600, which was founded in and is still based in Bradford, closed its Vauxhall dealership in Salts Mill Road.

In 2016, shopfitters Cardinal upped sticks to Laisterdyke from that area of Shipley, and HM Revenue and Custom will also be leaving when their Shipley office closes as part of a national shake-up in the autumn of 2020.
