A HOUSING developer will this week find out if it will be able to build in the centre of Harden.

Earlier this year Skipton Properties plans to build 28 houses on land off Keighley Road were scuppered by Bradford Council.

The developer had outline plans to build on the site, on the condition they provide affordable housing and contributions to facilities in the village to boost education and infrastructure.

But when it came to their more detailed application, the company said these conditions made the housing scheme "unviable," as they had encountered "abnormal costs" with the development.

They asked Bradford Council to allow these to be dropped from their planning permission.

Members of the Council's Regulatory and Appeals Committee refused this request, saying it should not be the job of taxpayers to subsidise developers when their projects cost more than they expect.

Skipton Properties has since come back with an application that removed the affordable housing, but will provide £108,970 worth of investment to the area.

This includes £47,000 to a local school, £32,000 to Harden Memorial Hall and £20,419 to St Ives Estate.

There will also be a £7,000 contribution to road markings around the site.

The tweaked plans will go before the Regulatory and Appeals Committee on Thursday, when members have been advised to approve the development.

The committee meets in City Hall at 10am.
