A LOAD of tyres have been dumped at the same beauty spot for a second time in a week, prompting calls for covert cameras to be installed.

Last week, the Telegraph & Argus reported how dozens of tyres had been left strewn across moorland above Haworth in a shocking incidence of fly-tipping.

A week on and a local councillor was appalled to discover that a fresh pile of tyres had been dumped at the exact same spot at Penistone Hill Country Park.

Now Councillor Rebecca Poulsen has called for action to be taken to prevent such “unacceptable behaviour” in the future.

Cllr Poulsen (Con, Worth Valley) said of the latest incident: “More tyres have been tipped at Penistone over the last few days.

“It is clearly a tyre business and the council will be looking for evidence when the tyres are removed.

“This is completely unacceptable behaviour and if anyone saw anything please report it.

“New measures in the car park may have to be considered to stop vehicles getting near the edge.”

Cllr Poulsen initially spoke to the T&A last week about the original incident when more than 100 tyres were brazenly dumped at the Haworth beauty spot.

She said that a local resident spotted the giant pile of tyres at Penistone Hill Country Park while walking her dog on Sunday.

“It was an atrocious example of fly-tipping - there were 156 car tyres in total. I counted them as the council’s countryside officers cleared them away.

“But I was able to speak to a local farmer who could make use of them to weigh down his silage, and the council was able to transport them to his farm in Oxenhope as a solution.”

She added: “I think we should have a zero tolerance approach to fly-tipping, but this needs to be combined with making it easy for people to recycle and reuse things.”

This time she added that a different solution will have to be found for the second set of tyres.

In addition she called for covert cameras to be used as well as a barrier - such as rocks - to be put in place to prevent vehicles getting close enough to the edge to be able to easily tip waste, such as the old tyres, over the edge.

This latest incident comes as Government figures show that reports of fly-tipping across Bradford have risen dramatically. The data shows that in the 12 months to the end of March there were a total of 14,317 reports of fly-tipping incidents across the district - a jump of 17.4 per cent on the previous year.

This places Bradford second only to Leeds in the region for the number of incidents reported - and above other large cities such as Sheffield.

A spokesperson for Bradford Council said: “Another load of tyres has been dumped in an area of Penistone Hill Country Park, for the second time in a week, which Bradford Council will clean up as soon as practicable.

“Discussions are on-going about how to prevent further fly-tipping in the area and one possibility is to modify the car parking arrangements so tipper vehicles can no longer reverse up to the edge of the quarry.

“No decisions have been taken as yet.

“We also need people to help us in our battle against this menace.”
