THE head of a school has spoken out about the “sad” break-in that took place at the school last week.

Burglars broke into St Cuthbert and the First Martyrs’ Catholic Primary School in Scotchman Road late on Friday night.

They smashed a window before taking a quantity of computing equipment from the school.

Crime scene investigation officers were at the scene over the weekend carrying out enquiries.

Some teachers, including head of school at St Cuthbert and the First Martyrs’ Daniel Copley attended the school over the weekend.

He said: “We don’t know absolutely what has been taken, but we know four or five laptops were taken and the window was pinged open.

“I think we will be alright, this should not affect the pupils too much.

“I have no idea of the cost of the window yet, it’s too early to tell.

“I was with staff over the weekend at the school and sadly, while it’s not a common thing at the school, across schools we have learned to deal with it.

“We work hard to ensure the site is safe and secure, and we work with local police and Council wardens to ensure the site is as safe as possible.

“But, unfortunately if someone wants to get in they’ll get in.”

Councillor Kamran Hussain (Toller, Labour) said he was “shocked and concerned” by the incident.

He said: “I’m shocked and really taken back by this.

“That individuals can attack a place of education, where young children are in their vital years, and take such important equipment for their education, it is very disappointing.

“There are questions that need to be answered, and it is shocking and concerning places of education are now being attacked.

“I understand the police are carrying out an ongoing investigation and are appealing for witnesses to come forward. I don’t know if this is a crime group or individuals, but hopefully they can be found.”

Following the incident, a spokesperson for West Yorkshire Police said: “Police were called at about 11.07pm on Friday, November 23, to a report of a break-in at a school on Scotchman Road in Bradford.

“Crime Scene Investigation officers have attended the scene and enquiries are ongoing into the offence in which computer equipment was taken.

“Anyone who saw suspicious behaviour at the school during yesterday evening between 8.45pm and just before 10pm is asked to contact Bradford Police on 101 referencing crime number 13180589228.

“Information can also be given using the live chat facility on the West Yorkshire Police website, or anonymously to the independent Crimestoppers charity on 0800 555 111.”

A West Yorkshire Police spokesperson confirmed yesterday there have been no further updates since the weekend and enquiries are ongoing.
