ALBION Sports continued their recent revival with a fourth win in five games as they beat Athersley Recreation 1-0 to climb above them in the Northern Counties East League premier division.

The Albion Lions suffered two setbacks in the first half when they lost both Sam Denton and Lamin Janneh to injuries. They regrouped and Ombeni Ruhanduka broke the deadlock to give the Lions a 40th-minute lead.

They retained that slender lead to the final whistle, despite the Rec getting a penalty late on after Albion skipper Joe Barden was adjudged to have handled in the area. George Clarke made a superb save to ensure the three points.

Lions boss Kulwinder Sandhu said: “It was an excellent save by George and a great three points really.

“It didn’t help losing two players to injury so early in the game but the younger lads have done really well. We’ve taken nine points out of the last 12 and beat Bottesford in the League Cup which is a great effort from the players.”

Eccleshill United climbed to ninth and consigned Goole AFC to the foot of the table after beating them 5-0. Jake Thompson claimed a hat-trick and recent signings Josh Grant and Adam Shaw were both on target.

The Eagles were only a one goal up at the break, courtesy of Thompson’s first, but Grant added just two minutes into the second half to open the floodgates and sink the Vikings.

Thackley earned another point from a good home draw, but the Dennyboys' boss Pat McGuire will feel as though it was two points dropped as visitors Staveley MW grabbed an equaliser from an injury-time penalty to make it 2-2.

Jordan Hines gave the Dennyboys a third-minute lead but, just 10 minutes later, Joe Pugh hit back for the Trojans. Thackley edged back in front 10 minutes from time through Jordan Hendrie but Pugh slotted in the visitors’ spot kick three minutes into time added on.

The draw takes the Dennyboys above Liversedge on goal difference after Jonathan Rimmington’s Sedge were hammered 10-0 at Bridlington Town in the absence of the manager, who missed the game due to health issues. He will not have felt any better after learning that Brid had won both halves 5-0.

Nathan Modest opened the scoring for the east coast club with Joe McFadyen weighing in with a hat-trick. Andy Norfolk, Chris Jenkinson, Fraser Papprill, Chris Adams, Dan Norton and Ben Clappison were the other scorers.

The top two in division one remain the same as joint-leaders Campion and Winterton Rangers played out a goalless draw at Scotchman Road.

The Black and Reds were in better form and had home advantage but they could not make the most of it as Rangers stayed top on goal difference. The chasing pack is now just two points behind the top two.
