A PETITION calling for a road to be closed to through traffic will be discussed by Councillors next week.

Seventy nine residents of Westfield Lane, Idle, have signed the petition calling for Bradford Council to close the 1.9 km stretch of road, saying it had become a "dangerous rat run."

They said drivers using the road, which links Idle to Wrose, had a "disregard" for the highway code and that they were fearful of a serious accident happening.

Their petition will be discussed by the Bradford East Area Committee on Thursday, although members will be told not to go ahead with the request.

A report to the committee says a traffic survey was carried out in November, and found that the average speed on the road was 28mph.

The report says: "These figures do not give cause for concern on a 30mph residential route."

It adds: "The closure of Westfield Lane would affect a large number of residents who would need to find alternative routes between Wrose, Shipley and Idle.

"Inevitably the closure of one route to through traffic will increase traffic volumes on other roads some of which may be equally undesirable alternative routes leading to requests for other through routes to also be closed."

The committee meets at 6pm in City Hall.
