A HUGE pile of rubbish blocked a road when it was brazenly dumped by a fly-tipper this morning.

The mass of household waste, soil, bin bags and a wheel were all found on New Lane, in Tong.

Police were sent to the shocking scene to re-direct motorists until the council arrived at the scene and clear up the mess.

A spokesman for Bradford Council said the fly-tipping "would be dealt with appropriately" and it was cleared up later on Thursday.

Nicola Furbisher, a resident who came across the waste, tweeted:  "Two police officers are on guard here warning motorists, horse riders etc until the council can turn out to clean up this shocking fly-tipped rubbish dumped at the Tong Lane end of New Lane this am, in broad daylight, blocking the entire road....."

Cllr Alan Wainwright (Labour, Tong) said: "It is absolutely diabolical.
"Fly tipping is a massive problem all over the country and I'm particularly fed up of it in the country lanes.

"If someone is going around at 2am with a wagon load of rubbish, the police or council have to rely on people reporting what has happened to them because they are going to continue to do it on country lanes and roads.

"I would love to see more people reporting these fly-tippers because it costs the council and, in some cases, the people who own the land.

"They have to clear it up and that's not fair.

"There are some proposals going through the council at the moment to put a gate at the bottom of New Lane, so only the farmer and the people that live there can get access."

We reported in September that Bradford had the highest rates of reported fly tipping in Yorkshire in 2017, with 7,852 reports of fly tipping, up from 7,112 in 2016/17.
