A FAMILY are celebrating the end of treatment for their little girl with a fundraising party for charity on Saturday.

Amelia Elphee, of Queensbury, was diagnosed in June with a cancer that only 29 other people in Europe are known to have.

After suffering a number of seizures, Amelia had a MRI scan on June 22 which revealed she had an ultra-rare “neuroepithelial” brain tumour.

Having had the 2cm tumour removed from her brain by surgeons in a seven-hour operation on June 27, Amelia flew to Essen, Germany, to receive the unique proton beam therapy, which is a less damaging form of radiotherapy, as it can target a specific area with pinpoint accuracy without damaging surrounding areas.

After spending nine weeks from August to October in Germany, the five-year-old is now back home and going to school after a successful course of treatment.

Proud mum Vicky Robinson said: “She did well. The party is a well done for being so brave.

“She has been amazing. Every day she had to go to hospital and she was awake the whole time because she couldn’t be sedated.”

Vicky said Amelia was a shy child but she managed to deal with the German staff and get the treatment in a room on her own as her family were not allowed to join her.

“Hopefully the treatment has done the trick.”

Amelia will have to have regular MRI scans to check the tumour cells do not come back.

The End of Treatment party is being held on Saturday, November 17, from 5pm at Queensbury Conservative Club with lots of attractions planned.

There will be a DJ, Peppa Pig, face painting, a raffle and food with donations from Tesco of food and raffle prizes.

Vicky added: “It will be nice for people to come and celebrate.

“She is an amazing little girl who has shown such strength and determination. She has inspired me in every way. It’s hard to not think about the meaning of life and how the little things seem so trivial now in comparison.”

She said the family would like to thank everyone for all of their support over the past six months. That included the sum of £8,040 being raised to help with the family’s, travel, accommodation and treatment costs while they were in Germany.

Also if anyone can donate any raffle prizes for Saturday, they should get in touch by calling 07962 358479.

The family are raising money for the Brain Tumour Charity which has helped them since Amelia was diagnosed.

The NHS will open its first proton beam cancer treatment centres in the next two years.
