A CHURCH in Clayton is playing its part in Battle's Over, an international commemoration marking the end of World War One.

St John's Church, The Avenue, is welcoming people to join in its celebrations, which will begin at 9.30am on Remembrance Sunday, with bagpipers playing Battle's O'er.

A Service of Remembrance will see members of the community pay tribute to those from the village who served in the war.

Scouts and Guides have decorated the church and have created a 'crown of poppies' around the top of the church tower.

As the Armistice is commemorated, the Guides will ring out Bells of Peace.

Also on display within the church is a map of the village, where the last known addresses of the Clayton fallen have been plotted.

The Vicar of Clayton, Vaughan Pollard said: "In Clayton, here at St John's Church, we are fortunate to be at the heart of the community and one that is keen to commemorate the 100th Anniversary of the World War One Armistice.

"It is important to us, and one of our priorities as a church, to support and work with other organisations, churches and individuals within our village, especially at this time, as we come together as a community, to pay tribute to those who have given their lives in all wars and conflicts."

Angela Hamilton, Parish Worship Assistant at the church said: "I feel immensely proud and privileged to have been involved in St John's Church 100th Anniversary of the Armistice commemorations and blessed to live in the village of Clayton, where the sacrifice and memory of men like my Great Uncle, Claude Townsend, are still recognised, remembered and respected."
