A NEW survey have revealed people in Bradford are wasting more than £8 million a year by choosing the wrong mobile phone contract.

The data, compiled by HandsetExpert, revealed people with mobile contracts are wasting £8,260,411 on unsuitable contracts.

It found 65 per cent of people would be better off choosing a SIM only deal and buying their handset separately, rather than buying a phone and contract together on a pay monthly deal.

Dr Shahrum Gilani, founder HandsetExpert, said: “The number of mobile phone deals has shot up over the years, which makes it even harder to find the right one.

“While having lots of choice is generally good, it shouldn’t be used as a way to divert customers away from the best deals. Our research shows customers are still paying over the odds on their phone bills.”

The research found 57 per cent of contract phone users are on the wrong contract, and could save £88 if they switched to a more suitable deal for their phone usage.

Of that 57 per cent, two thirds are contract users who would be better off switching to a SIM only deal, which would save them an average of £92 a year.

The other third are SIM only users who would save an average of £80 a year by switching to a monthly contract.

There are 4.7 million different phone contracts currently available in the UK.

Nationally, people in the UK are wasting £1.55 billion, and in Yorkshire & the Humber the total is almost £128 million a year.
