PLANNERS have approved proposals to close a city centre road and absorb it into a car park.

Tyson Street is currently a dead end road that leads to the Jamiyat Tabligh-Ul-Islam Mosque on Westgate on one side, and a disused public car park on the other side.

The application, by Liaqat Hussain, will see the road closed and become parking for the mosque. The area would be resurfaced and 15 extra spaces will be created.

The application had said the changes "would give the mosque much needed extra parking which would take off of adjacent roads."

Approving the application, Bradford Council planning officers said: "The development is considered to be acceptable given that Tyson Street no longer serves as a through route for vehicles or pedestrians and the existing car park has fallen into disuse." They said it would likely "reduce the reliance on on-street parking for patrons of the Mosque."

One objector to the plans had said the changes would cause "severe congestion" on days Bradford City played home matches.

Officers replied saying: "It is unclear why this would be the case, however it is understood that outside of peak times the Mosque car park is available for members of the public to park."
