AS children across the district prepare to go trick-or-treating today, Morrisons has thrown its self into the spooky spirit of Halloween, by creating the frightening R.I.Pizza.

The fiendishly spicy and scary-looking 10-inch treat is perfect for Halloween parties or for people who love spicy food.

To see if the pizza is as scary to eat as it looks, myself and my colleague Brad Deas were sent out to a local Morrisons store to pick up an R.I.Pizza each, and see if we were brave enough to try them.

Fresh off our successful curry challenge – where we ate the Morrisons’ Flaming Fiery Phaal – we aren’t the type to say no to a challenge (or eat pizza).

On first glance, the R.I.Pizza is daunting. The peculiar ghoulishly-green base (turned green by an edible algae Spirulina, which apparently is very popular at the moment) is topped with a ghost chilli tomato sauce, Reaper infused cheddar cheese, spicy beef, an extra helping of chilli sauce, and more jalapenos and chillies than you can shake a stick at.

It looked hot. Really hot. The ‘tomb-stone baked’ pizza, priced at £2.50, comes with a warning notice, and we were nervous about trying it.

Bradford Telegraph and Argus:

It turned out we needn't have worried. While the pizza was spicy - probably the spiciest pizza I’ve ever eaten - it didn’t quite live up to expectations.

The heat lingers in your mouth from the sauce, cheese and chillies, but after that there isn’t any deeper, more intense heat. The bread base probably helps mask some of the spice, but with a name like R.I.Pizza, we both expected a little bit more.

Flavour-wise, it was a really good pizza, as Morrisons’ in-store products tend to be, full of flavour and filling, and despite looking like it was covered in a month’s worth of mould, the base was nice and fluffy too.

Truthfully, it’s probably for the best that the pizza is not as ridiculously hot as the Flaming Fiery Phaal. By being slightly less spicy it allows the flavour to fully come through and it means you can actually enjoy eating it.

Bradford Telegraph and Argus:

Brad agreed with me: “After trying the Flaming Fiery Phaal a few weeks ago, I was expecting a similar blast of spice, but was a little disappointed when a few bites left only a slight tingle.

“But this one was purely about the flavour, for me. Despite being green, the base was fantastic, the sauce was tangy with a nice bitter edge and the toppings were tasty.”

For Halloween parties, the pizza would be great, as while the heat may be too much for some when faced with a full pizza, being able too eat the odd slice is great.

And for the foolhardy among us, why not eat a full one - but if your heat tolerance is set to molten lava, you may be left wanting.
