A businessman stopped by police as he drove away from Tesco in the early hours was over the drink drive limit, heard magistrates.

Thomas Dunn, 30, who works in Bradford, had been drinking at a friend's house in Skipton, the court heard on Friday.

He had gone out with the intention of playing board games and had unexpectedly ended up drinking to celebrate a friend's birthday.

Dunn had then stopped off at Tesco on his way home where he had spoken to an ambulance driver, the court heard.

A short distance from Tesco in Coach Street, he was stopped by police who had received a call reporting a potential drink driver, which Dunn believed could have been the ambulance driver.

He provided a positive roadside breath test and was taken to the police station where he was found to have 75 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath, the legal limit is 35.

Dunn, a man of previous good character, of Gladstone Street, Skipton, admitted driving over the alcohol limit on September 29.

In mitigation John Mewies said Dunn had had no intention of drinking when he had gone out, and accepted he had acted foolishly.

He worked in Bradford and would now have to rely on public transport.

He was banned from driving for 18 months fined £166, and ordered to pay costs of £85 and a surcharge of £30. If he completes a drink drivers rehabilitation course, his ban will be reduced by 18 weeks.
