A NURSERY in Wyke has been rated inadequate in its first Ofsted report.

Ladybird Kindergarten, in Main Street, Wyke, received the rating after an inspection earlier this month.

Issues raised in the report included checks to see if staff are DBS certified to work with children not being carried out, safeguarding issues, and insufficient risk assessments.

In the Ofsted report, it said: “The provider shows a lack of awareness of all the safeguarding and welfare requirements.

“He has failed to ensure that all staff have the required checks to verify their suitability to work with children.

“The safeguarding policy is not in line with current guidance set by the Local Safeguarding Children Board.

“The provider and manager do not know how to respond to allegations made against members of staff.

“The provider does not ensure the adult-to-child ratios are maintained at all times. This puts children’s safety at risk.

“Risk assessments are not effective and leaders do not identify or reduce hazards to children quickly enough.

“Assessments of children’s learning are inconsistent. Staff have not carried out the required progress check for children aged between two and three years.

“Staff do not use information they gather from observations to plan purposeful activities that capture children’s interests and identify their individual needs.

“Children do not benefit from learning experiences that raise outcomes.

“The provider and manager have not fully implemented supervision sessions that are rigorous enough in identifying and addressing staff’s training needs and inconsistencies in teaching.”

Ofsted did acknowledge parents were positive about the nursery and said their children are happy and well cared for.

Ladybird Kindergarten declined to comment on the outcome of the report and the issues it raised.

Registered in 2016, Ladybird Kindergarten has space for up to 60 children on its roll, and provides care for children aged zero to eight.

It has nine members of childcare staff, of whom six hold appropriate early years qualifications at Level 3 or higher.
