STAFF at Craven Leisure pool in Skipton have responded to public pressure and re-introduced lane swims for older swimmers.

Over 50s swimmers - including some in their 80s - protested after changes to the programme meant their three times a week, half hourly lane swims were scrapped - leaving them to mix in with the general lane swims.

But now, following strong opposition, they are to be reinstated on November 5, exactly as they were.

Lloyd Hancox, leisure services manager at Craven District Council, said: “As part of our recent pool timetable changes, we did create a general lane swim session across lunchtime, which over 50s were welcome to use. However we listened to what customers were saying about the 50 plus swimming sessions and surveyed people who were taking part in the lunchtime sessions. There was overwhelming support for reintroducing the 50 plus swims and so we responded to customers’ wishes and brought these sessions back.”

Stephen Barker, 73, from Farnhill, a regular user of the over 50s lane swims, and spokesman for objectors, said they were delighted and grateful they were to be reinstated from next week.

Councillor Andy Brown said: “I am grateful to staff for responding flexibly to requests from the public for the continuation of this important service. I am also really pleased that the people who contacted me who want to stay fit and healthy and enjoy a regular swim are now able to do so.”
