A SCHOOL in Baildon has successfully bid to receive an award recognising its strength in science, technology, engineering and maths.

Titus Salt School, based in Higher Coach Road, has received the Excellence in STEM Award, run through the National STEM Centre and National Science and Media Museum.

The award was presented to the school to validate the emphasis on STEM within the school.

Titus Salt is the first school in West Yorkshire to be presented with the award.

The school has run a number of projects to promote STEM subjects, such as the Premier Farnell challenge, a project that will lead to Year 13 students at the school showcasing their invention in the next UK-wide Big Bang competition.

Year 9 students also took part in the Arris Consumer Electronic project, and the school also started a STEM club which has attracted a large number of students to take part in STEM-related extra-curricular activities.

Stuart Green, STEM leader, said: “Staff and pupils are extremely happy and we look forward to working towards achieving this award for many years to come.”

The National STEM Centre, based in York, is the largest provider of education support in STEM subjects in the UK, supported by the Government, charitable trusts and businesses, aiming to get more young people into STEM careers.
