A BUS has ended up inside a local market square opticians after an incident. 

Police were called to Market Street, Shipley at around 12.05pm today to reports of a bus crashing into a shop.

The orange Yorkshire Tiger bus can be seen protruding out from the Shipley Eyewear Opticians. 

It is believed a black Volkswagen Passat was involved in the incident, but the circumstances are not yet known.

Yorkshire Ambulance Service was also rushed to the scene.

It sent a Hazardous Area Response team, three ambulances and one rapid response vehicle.

A police spokesperson said there are no major injuries.

Clinical Supervisor for Yorkshire Ambulance Service, Claire Craft, said on Twitter that everyone is safe and hospital was not required.

The police spokesperson added: "Market Street is closed and we advise motorists avoid the area at this time."

Enquiries are continuing.

Ashley France, 50, of Baildon was round the corner when he heard a loud bang.

He said: "My son was getting lunch and he came back and said you better come look at this - there was about 200 people crowded round."

Mr France said local healthy living charity, HALE Project, had put out chairs for passengers from the bus who were in shock.

Around 12 elderly people were on the bus, according to Mr France.

He said the area is an accident waiting to happen with buses queuing up at the T-junction and said a solution might be barriers in front of the shops.

He added: "There's seats for customers by the window, imagine if the receptionist sees this bus coming - it could have been worse.

"Ladbrokes next door, my son works there but by the grace of God he wasn't in today.

"An old person could have been walking past. It's just luck, complete luck, it could have been full with people."

The Keighley Bus Company Aireline 60 bus service to and from Leeds is diverting in both directions via A657 Saltaire Road. 

On its Twitter the company said: "Delays are inevitable."



 

First West Yorkshire has also tweet about its Shipley Market Place services 613, 614, 615 and 633.

Those buses are diverting Briggate, turning right onto Otley Road, where they will double back up Otley road turning left back onto Briggate.
