A PROJECT capturing the thoughts, feelings and memories of Bolton's first Asian settlers has received more funding enabling it to grow.

The Sunnyside Club has received a £9,900 Sharing Heritage grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund for its We Were There, Lives of Bolton's First Asian Migrants.

It follows a hugely successful £10,000 funded project last year to document the arrival of the first generation in the town through photographs and a special book, while helping to combat loneliness among older Asian by getting involved.

Project co-ordinators are looking to collect more photographs, artefacts and newspaper articles from the 1950s to 1980’s.

Local Events will be held, oral history collated, photos, film negatives and other memorabilia digitised and a second edition of the book will be launched when completed.

This will be carried out in partnership with Bolton Council, University of Bolton and The Bolton News.

The first edition was so popular the group have ran out of supplies of the book. Free copies of the book were also donated to local school, libraries and universities.

The Sunnyside Club is based in the clubhouse at Deane and Derby Cricket and Social Club and works with adults and children maximizing and developing their potential.

Set up in 2010 they have successfully delivered homework clubs, IT Sessions for adults and organised other community events.

Salma Patel, from The Sunnyside Club said: "It’s been a busy last year with volunteers working incredibly hard. We have shown the quality of the book to the photograph donors and other supporters who want to see a second edition of the book.

We are looking for people from all backgrounds to share their photographs, articles and memories via social media as well and welcome people to contact us.

Nathan Lee Head of HLF North West said: “Sharing Heritage is a wonderful opportunity for communities to delve into their local heritage and we are delighted to be able to offer this grant so that The Sunnyside Club can embark on a real journey of discovery. Heritage means such different things to different people, and HLF’s funding offers a wealth of opportunities for groups to explore and celebrate what’s important to them in their area.”
