PLANS are currently being drawn up to redevelop Kirkgate Market, alongside already revealed plans for a major new food market on Darley Street.

Bradford Council has already announced its intention to shake up its market service, including turning the former Marks & Spencer store on Darley Street into a multi million pound food only market development.

At the same time it was announced that moves were underway to regenerate Kirkgate Market, and it has now been revealed that the new look, non-food market is scheduled to open in the centre in 2020.

The plans for the Kirkgate Market are expected to be revealed in the New Year, and the Council hopes both markets should have planning permission in place by Spring.

The £21 million shake up of the city's markets will be discussed by Bradford Council's Regeneration and Environment Scrutiny Committee on Tuesday.

A consultation into the market plans will take place from the end of the month until the end of the year. Members of the public will be shown concept designs of the proposed food market in the city centre at locations including the Oastler Centre, Kirkgate Centre, and Broadway Shopping Centre.

A report to the committee says: "The aim of these consultations is to capture trader and customer opinions on our plans, proposed retail offer and any barriers to encouraging more visits to the markets.

"Any comments received can then inform the design process.

"The potential responses will also capture a cross section from local city centre businesses, Bradford Chamber of Commerce, Bradford Civic Society, Bradford District Chamber of Trade, Elected Members and Council officers."

Members will be given a list of "key milestones" for the two market redevelopments.

For both Kirkgate and the new Darley Street Market, the Council is hoping to secure planning permission in the first quarter of 2019, with work to start on the Darley Street building shortly after.

Traders for the revamped Kirkgate Market will be chosen next summer, with construction work starting early 2020, and the new look market opening later that year.

Construction work on the Darley Street market is expected to begin next summer. Traders will be chosen in Summer 2020 and the market will open in 2021.

A report to the committee says details work into the Kirkgate improvements, saying: "Negotiations are on-going with the Head Landlord of the Kirkgate Centre regarding our ambition to create an improved non-food market offer in the Kirkgate Centre.

"Further announcements on our plans for this market are expected to be published in the New Year."

The Markets shake up will include the demolition of the Oastler Centre and the creation of a "City Village" in its place. Last week the Council announced it had appointed real estate specialists Cushman and Wakefield to move forward with the project, which will eventually see around 1,000 homes built in the area.

The Council says the project will create "a vibrant and attractive urban village environment with green healthy streets and public spaces, homes, independent shops, cafes, bars and business spaces built on high quality and sustainable principles."
