SIR - While being pleased that the anti-fracking protesters who demonstrated at a site in Lancashire last month have had their prison sentences overturned, I would like to give these people a reality check.

The protesters are claiming that fracking is bad for the environment and a risk to public health. The fact is that road traffic, mainly cars, is responsible for more deaths than fracking will ever be. And while protesting, some of them use cars and indeed cause traffic jams, creating convoys adding to pollution.

The defenders of our country being a car infested hell hole use necessity as an excuse, and remain largely unconcerned. The fracking industry will use the same justification, necessity, to carry out its pursuit of shale gas.

I'm in a constant state of disbelief as to why the affects of air pollution and road accidents gets ignored by so many.
