SIR- In response to D. Hodgson, T&A letters, 12th October regarding Labour’s unemployment levels.

When you observe unemployment and recessions from the 20th Century to now, the three great spikes in unemployment occurred due to the unregulated disaster capitalism that the Tories favour.

In 1929 a Labour government had only been in office a few months before the global depression of 1929 struck with no time to reverse the 19th Century economics that contributed to the crash.

The early/mid 80’s under Margaret Thatcher witnessed eye watering levels of unemployment that dwarfed Labours late 70’s unemployment levels despite Labour enduring the economic shocks of two oil crises.

The end of Thatcherism in 1990 saw in another recession with very high unemployment and Britain taking until 1995 to recover.

However the doozy under an established Labour government in 2008 was worsened because New Labour followed the same deregulated capitalism that the Tories adhere to, and until this changes it will happen again and again.
