A DOCTOR from Bradford is in the process of developing a make-up product which she claims will protect people from the vile crime of acid attacks.

It’s an idea Almas Ahmed, 32, has been formulating for a decade, when she first heard about Katie Piper’s horrific ordeal.

The inspirational campaigner has rebuilt her life after surviving an acid attack back in March 2008, when she was just 24 years old.

Her attacker, Stefan Sylvestre, was recently released from prison after serving nine years in jail for the despicable crime.

Now Dr Ahmed, from Manningham, hopes her product can go some way to preventing others from going through the same life-changing heartbreak.

She said: “The idea first came about when I was in university and heard about Katie Piper on the news. It was really heartbreaking and I remember discussing it with my sister.

“She was aware that it’s actually quite a problem in Asian countries, she told me more about it, so I started developing this product. It’s basically just a make-up, it looks, feels, smells, works just like regular make-up, but it’s completely heat-proof and acid-proof.

“You can’t burn it and it won’t burn through either.”

The product is currently being tested in India and the next step is getting approval in the UK through the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency before it can be marketed.

Dr Ahmed says formulating the ‘Acarrier’ product has consumed her life and a venture she has ploughed around £60,000 of her own money into.

She said: “It feels good getting it to this stage, but it’s unfortunate in society it has become more of a problem. I never thought we would have this issue in England. It’s kind of bittersweet because I do want it to work and help people, but I didn’t want our society to live like this and have this fear.”

She said she chose make-up as it’s a “normal” part of life. Miss Ahmed would also like to introduce a moisturiser and has ambitious plans to create a ‘body armour’ type moisturiser which she says could be made stab proof.

The make-up has a compound in it which means anything caustic cannot react with it.

Dr Ahmed said: “There is nothing else like this, other than wearing a helmet. Unfortunately because of the way society has changed, we can’t stop living our lives. We can’t live in fear either and hopefully people will wear this and feel empowered and safe to go out.”

She is now raising money to be used in the final stages of testing and getting the product regulated. She also hopes to help victims of acid attacks in their rehabilitation.
