A FATHER-OF-SIX has spoken of his horror after waking up to find sewage had overflown into his garden and along his driveway.

Eugene Okungbowa, 30, of Broadstone Way, Holme Wood, first discovered the problem with an overflowing manhole in his back garden two weeks ago, and spent £50 bringing the problem under control.

However, he woke up on Saturday to find the problem had returned, and human waste swimming in his garden and spilling out into the street.

He explained: "It's horrible.

"I had to lift my children across the road to stop them walking in it.

"It first happened about two weeks ago and was coming out of the manhole in my garden.

"Everything was coming out of it."

Mr Okungbowa hired a firm to clean up the mess and believed his nightmare was over once the blockage was cleared up.

But the same thing happened only a few days later and the father urged Yorkshire Water to help him.

"Everything went down and we were thinking the problem was solved," he added.

"The people who came to fix it told me that if it happened again, to phone Yorkshire Water.

"I was praying to God that it didn't happen again, but I woke up last Saturday to find it had.

"It had overflowed from the garden and onto my car.

"I had to go and get my car cleaned!

"I don't know how much bacteria has come through my house, but this was going to harm my family."

A Yorkshire Water spokesman said problems like the one Mr Okungbowa encountered are frequently caused by items being flushed down the toilet which only result in pipes being blocked.

A spokesman told the Telegraph & Argus: “We have a team arranged to visit Broadstone Way today to clean up the street and investigate and unblock the sewer to ensure it is flowing freely.

"Often sewer overflows such as this are caused by wet wipes being flushed down the toilet so we would remind all out customers to only flush the ‘3P’s’ down the toilet – poo, pee and paper.

"We’d like to thank the local residents who notified us of this incident."
