A BINGLEY-based charity which helps young people with Down Syndrome and their families has received a grant of nearly £11,000.

The Down Syndrome Training & Support Service has been awarded £10,937 from the Postcode Community Trust, a grant -giving charity funded entirely by players of People’s Postcode Lottery.

The charity supports 400 children and young people with Down Syndrome and employs a Family Support Co-ordinator, Wendy Rhodes, who offers guidance and support via telephone, text, home visits, social media and email. Wendy, a parent of a 15-year-old young man with Down Syndrome, has worked for the charity for 11 years.

As well as allowing Wendy to continue providing vital support to families, the funding will also allow for a group counselling course to run at the centre for six weeks in November and December.

Wendy Uttley, group co-ordinator and trainer said: “Parents really benefit from having the opportunity to meet other families in a similar situation, and thanks to the funding boost from Postcode Community Trust, they will be able to continue to share mutual experiences, concerns and learn strategies to help them cope in their busy lives.”
