A MAN was hacked to the bone in a revenge attack with a machete and a crossbow, a jury at Bradford Crown Court heard.

Aron Barton is accused of going “tooled up” to take the law into his own hands after his car was damaged in a violent incident in the street.

Barton, 28, of Bolton Road, Bradford, repeatedly struck his ex-girlfriend’s brother, Louis Waddington, with the machete, severely damaging his hand and slicing his leg to the bone, it is alleged.

Barton denies unlawfully and maliciously wounding Mr Waddington with intent to do him grievous bodily harm in St John Street, Brighouse, and an alternative lesser offence of unlawfully wounding him.

He also pleads not guilty to threatening Mr Waddington and James Casey with a crossbow and assaulting Shonagh Waddington by beating her.

All the allegations are said to have taken place on Sunday, August 13, last year.

Prosecutor Nadim Bashir said Barton and Miss Waddington were in an “on and off” relationship at the time.

When she called at his then address in Angus Avenue, Wyke, Bradford, they argued after Barton received a call from another woman.

Mr Bashir told the jury that Barton kicked Miss Waddington and stamped on her phone.

When he drove her home to St John Street, the windscreen of his car was smashed and the bonnet dented, it is alleged.

Barton accused members of Miss Waddington’s family of damaging his vehicle and returned to the address with two friends, the court heard.

Barton was said to be “tooled up” with a machete and a crossbow while his associate had a nail gun.

Mr Bashir said it was “a revenge attack” when the defendant took the law into his own hands because his car had been damaged.

He arrived at the scene in a white Nissan Pixo, with a white van following behind.

Barton is said to have fired the crossbow out of the front passenger window at Louis Waddington and then chased Mr Waddington’s step-father, James Casey, with the weapon.

He is then accused of seizing the machete from the car, raising it above his head and hacking at Mr Waddington with it.

Mr Waddington suffered a fractured finger and tendon and artery damage to his hand and a wound that cut his right leg to the bone, the jury heard.

The police recovered a broken crossbow bolt from the scene. The Pixo and the van were extensively damaged and spattered in blood. A baseball bat and a crossbow bolt were recovered from the back seat of the Pixo.

Mr Bashir said the crossbow had Barton’s fingerprint on it.

He handed himself into the police station the next day.

Barton said he did not kick Miss Waddington and that he was punched and his car damaged when he took her home.

When he returned to the address later that day to sort out payment for the damage, Mr Waddington stabbed his friend in the leg, he claimed.

Barton said the weapons were already at the scene and that Mr Waddington could have injured himself with the machete.

The trial continues.
