A TOP mountaineer from Pakistan is speaking at the University of Bradford on Monday.

Nazir Sabir, pictured, became the first Pakistani to climb Mount Everest in 2000 and also climbed K2, the second tallest mountain in the world, along a new route in 1981.

He will give a lectured titled Looking Death in the Eye, talking about his life and achievements in the mountaineering world.

He said: “I have heard of Bradford’s outstanding beauty and I am looking forward to my visit.

“I hope my visit will encourage Bradford’s trekking and mountaineering community to visit Gilgit Baltistan, the rooftop of the world, in Pakistan.”

The event is taking place as part of Mr Sabir's world tour, and he was invited to Bradford by Haroon Rashid.

Mr Rashid, from Bradford, is honorary ambassador in the UK and Europe for Gilgit Baltistan, the area of Pakistan Mr Sabir calls home.

Me Rashid said: “It is a great privilege to welcome Nazir Sabir, a world class mountaineer, to our great city of Bradford.

"We have some spectacular scenery within a few miles from our city centre, we have a great trekking and climbing community in Bradford and I’m sure it will be a thoroughly enjoyable evening listening to Nazir speak on his expeditions.”

Tickets to attend the lecture, which will start at 6pm on Monday, October 15, are free, and can be booked by visiting bit.ly/2QMqu6Z
