A MAN who produced a bladed weapon when he was caught red-handed trying to steal a vehicle SatNav has been jailed for 18 months.

Nigel Simoni was sitting in the front seat of the black BMW in Filey Street, near Bradford city centre, when he was challenged by Azhar Khan who shut the vehicle door on him.

Simoni waved a bladed multi tool at Mr Khan who feared for his life, prosecutor Louise Pryke told Bradford Crown Court on Thursday.

When Simoni escaped out of the passenger side of the car, Mr Khan and his cousin pursued and restrained him.

The court was told that Simoni tried to bite Mr Khan, but he shouted from the dock: “I’ve got no teeth, Your Honour.”

Simoni, 47, of Akroyd Street, Morley, pleaded guilty to attempted theft and to possession of a bladed weapon at 1pm on December 21 last year.

He was on prison licence at the time and had 104 offences on his record, including eight convictions for possession of an offensive weapon.

In 2013, he was given a nine year extended prison sentence for an aggravated burglary in which he held a knife to a woman.

Simoni’s barrister, Ian Hudson, said his client knew he would receive a prison sentence.

He was himself injured when he was restrained at the scene and the weapon he produced was not a knife but a bladed multi tool.
