PUPILS at a Bradford primary school emptied their piggy banks and pockets of spare change before taking part in an unusual art challenge.

St Matthew's CE Primary School, in West Bowling, set its pupils the challenge to make sculptures and pictures out of coins.

The challenge was part of a fundraising activity the school is calling the Penny Charity Appeal, supporting local charities.

It was organised around one of the school's new core values - generosity - and each class took part in the competition creating pictures from their loose change.

The winner was chosen by the School Council, with the winning class being awarded with a film afternoon.

Pupils will also get to pick which charity their money supports.

Kay Remmer, headteacher at St Matthew's, said: “The children have really taken our Penny Charity Appeal to heart.

"The school has been buzzing with excitement about this fund-raising activity which has been creative and fun.

"We have also used it to discuss how we can be generous with our creative abilities, time and money to help others.”
