A SWITCH-ON ceremony has marked the beginning of Diwali celebrations at Bradford’s Hindu Temple.

The Hindi Cultural Society were joined at the Temple by the Lord Mayor of Bradford Councillor Abid Hussain, the Mayoress of Bradford, Cllr Zafar Ali and Bishop of Bradford Dr Toby Howarth, who switched on the Diwali Lights.

Speeches were given by all the guests on the meaning of Diwali and the importance of removing ignorance and bringing all communities and faiths together to form a better understanding of other cultures and religions.

Diwali, the “Festival of lights” also known as Deepavali is one of the grandest festivals of India. Diwali is an occasion of Joy, prosperity, wealth, Knowledge and brightness.

It is a significant festival for Hindus, Buddhists, Sikhs, and Jains, and its significance stems back to Hindu mythology, which dates back thousands of years. This year it will be celebrated on November 7.
