A TABLET bearing the coat of arms of a globally-renowned heraldic artist is to be displayed in a Cleckheaton church.

The heraldic hatchment (pictured) of the late Romilly Squire of Rubislaw will be presented to Whitechapel Church this Saturday.

His ashes will also be taken to the church.

Mr Squire died in December 2016 at the age of 63. Described as the “doyen” of heraldic artists, with an encyclopaedic knowledge of heraldry, Mr Squire boasted a worldwide reputation.

He visited the church, where the family grave of his great, great, great, great grandfather William Squire, lays back in 2008 and stated in his will that his ashes be spread there, beside the grave.

He also left a sum of £9,140 to the church, which will be used to help complete the internal refurbishment of the church.
