SIXTY teams and more than 1,000 people attended Bradford Disability Football Club's (BDFC) third annual tournament at Southfield Grange School.

The trophies and medals were awarded by Mark Bower, manager of Bradford Park Avenue, and James Howard from the main tournament sponsor Yorkshire Card Payments.

The ever-popular growing event attracted teams and supporters from all over the UK and also, from Germany, Dortmund and Hamm, Bradford's twin town.

BDFC spokesman Andy Clayton said: "The team from Hamm were very impressed with the organisation of the event and witnessed at first hand the fun and camaraderie among the young players.

"They have subsequently invited BDFC to their own tournament which will be held next year in the German city.

"The Bradford club have accepted the invite and are in the early stages of planning for what will be a wonderful opportunity for their members.

"The planning will be extensive but not a first for BDFC, who participate in foreign tournaments on an annual basis.

"The trustees from BDFC would like to express their thanks to their hosts at the school, all the generous sponsors and many volunteers.

"The tournament was a fantastic success made possible by the support received from the many individuals that gave up their time and resources to make it happen."

BDFC is an independent football club that was founded 17 years ago by Paul Squires, whose son Alex has Down's Syndrome.

The club welcomes players and carers from all ethnic backgrounds with any disability from the Bradford district.

It has seen a recent surge in membership in the Keighley area where training takes place every Monday night at UAK, Greenhead Lane, from 7-8pm. Members from Bradford train at the college sports centre on Trinity Road every Friday from 6-8pm and on Sundays from 10am to noon.

The club would also welcome anyone who would like to coach their disabled members along to a Keighley session to sample the fantastic spirit at the club.

BDFC recently won the 'Charter Standard Club of the Year' at an event organised by the West Riding Football Association held at Elland Road and the club is always on the look out for more members and players from all age groups.

The club is already aiming to surpass this year's tournament and the planning committee are already arranging meetings to ensure that the 2019 tournament is even more successful.

If you would like to get involved with BDFC they can be contacted through all the usual social media channels.
