THERE has been a fire at Fagley Youth and Community Centre, the latest chapter in the "sorry story of the last two years" at the site.

Fire crews were called out to the blaze at the centre in Fagley Road, Fagley earlier this afternoon, and were still at the site after 5pm.

Councillor Geoff Reid (Lib Dem, Eccleshill) said he was alerted to the fire by a resident of the Fagley estate.

He said: "The Youth and Community Centre is on fire again.

"There is a lot of internal stuff burning. Apparently about half a dozen youngsters were messing around a couple of days ago so it could have been them.

"A resident on the estate say flames and smokes and rang for the fire service and contacted me.

"The fire crews had to break their way in through the fence to get their engines in there, and they said they have been onto the police because they needto make the building secure again.

"The building will be demolished when the new housing estate goes up but it's another chapter in the sorry story of the centre over the last couple of years.

"It's not good for the morale of the people of Fagley to have this fire."
