ROYAL Wootton Bassett's High Street has never looked quite like it does this morning.

It has been covered with hundreds of knitted breasts to raise awareness of breast cancer this morning by 'yarn bombers'.

Under the cover of darkness a stealthy team of knitters, known only as Team Titters, have put their creations up and down the street.

The group of 100 knitters and sewers have been labouring in honour of much-loved friend Ellen Woollaston-Cooper, who was recently told she has terminal secondary cancer after being in remission from breast cancer in 2015.

“When we heard about Ellen’s diagnosis we wanted to turn what could be a time of sorrow into a period of joy,” said the ‘ringleader’ of the group.

“The main thing was just to make Ellen laugh.

“Ellen is one of those rare life enhancing people who create friendships, silliness and communities wherever she goes and we wanted to do something to celebrate that."

The team has even had knitted boobs sent into them via the post, coming from all over the UK and France, all from friends who have known Ellen over the years.

“My sons would say ‘mum another ones arrived - it’s more boobs,’’ added the leader of group.

Ellen, 41, from the town and is chair of governors at Royal Wootton Bassett School, said: “Of course the diagnosis is no fun and can be scary. But we don’t talk like that in our house.

“We don’t say terminal – we say forever. Forever has no end date. We like a little positivity here!” she continued “I need to make sure I’ve lived this path fully, because I’m not dead yet. If we can help, by raising funds to fund a cure or raising funds to make life easier for those living with this, then that’s what we need to do”

“As a crafter, hearing about the 'boob bomb' and how many came together to do this has been amazing! If we can raise a smile and a laugh too, even better! Check your boobs people!”

The boobs will carry labels explaining how people can make a donation to the Ridgeway Breast Care Support Group and can be taken away for free.

Kay Sharpe, support group chair at the charity, added: “The whole idea of a massive yarn ‘boob bomb’ sounded like a fantastic way to promote the message to remind people to check themselves and the Support Group are extremely grateful to Ellen for thinking of us”.
