Tim Bresnan claimed his first five-wicket haul in a little over two years as Yorkshire enjoyed an impressive second day against Hampshire at Emerald Headingley and are now pushing for victory.

The former England all-rounder then admitted that his performances this season have been below par.

Bresnan, 33, was the standout bowler as Yorkshire, defending a first-innings total of 184, bowled Hampshire out for 157 just after lunch on day two.

He finished with 5-28 from 13 overs before watching Adam Lyth’s unbeaten 60 lead a second-innings score of 172-4, which amounts to a lead of 199.

"We've got a very useful lead, and it's massive for us,” said Bresnan.

“We said this morning 'If we can turn up and be on the better end of all three sessions, we'll be in a great position to try and get a win’.”

Bresnan has only taken nine five-wicket hauls in his first-class career, reasoning: “It's probably down to not having the new ball.

“Usually, bowling with the new ball is easier to get a hatful of wickets rather than three or four.

“Our new ball bowlers seem to do the job most often. It's up to Steve Patterson and myself to do the grunt work and pick up twos and threes.

“I felt in decent rhythm, and the boys applied a lot of pressure this morning and last night (day one), so it was a nice to finish them off.

“I didn’t think I’d be getting many past the age of 30, but it feels good.

“It’s nice to know I can still do it and reward the faith Yorkshire have shown in me by giving me a new two-year deal.”

Bresnan, currently making his eleventh Championship appearance of 2018, has now taken 32 wickets and scored 384

“It’s more the runs from myself which help the team down the bottom, and I’ve been lacking,” he added.

"I've not been really good enough this year, so it's nice to finally get a few runs and wickets and help the team towards winning games.”
