A NEW gym could be opened in former industrial units in Low Moor.

Plans have been lodged with Bradford Council to transform the former Moorside Works, on Abb Scott Lane into the independent 'The Pride' gym.

In a letter submitted along with planning documents, applicant Terry Holt says: "I personally believe that the new gym, opened by a proud Bradfordian, will provide an accessible and friendly facility to improve health and fitness for all in the BD12 area.

"The Pride will look to employ three local people whom are currently unemployed and actively seeking work with 30 hours paid work at the living wage rate.

"I am looking to employ two further local people on a part time basis to cover shifts and work around 15 hours per week.

"The Pride is determined to develop and reward loyalty and will put employees through a qualification programme in health and fitness on completion of one years’ service to the company."

He adds: "The new Low Moor train station is less than one mile away giving an additional local business for use by commuters looking to travel to either Leeds or Manchester.

"I believe the new gym will improve local services for people moving to the area to use the new train station and help to grow the local economy further."

The application sets out that some of the building's internal walls will be removed so the floor can be opened up to accommodate exercise machines.

It says the opening hours will be 6am through to 10pm, with reduced hours of 7am to 7pm on weekends and bank holidays.

"The general area is essentially commercial and there are no residential properties near the site that would be affected by the proposed use and particularly the car park area," says the application.

The buildings are a collection of single-storey and brick sheds which have been used for carpet supplies, equipment storage and vehicle repairs.

It includes space for 15 cars to park and the application says provision has also been made for "number of secure cycle spaces".

Proposed plans for the gym show a main gym area, a spin room, a ladies-only workout room, plus showers and changing rooms.

A determination deadline for the application has been set for Thursday, November 1.
