A NURSE from Bradford has been given an award for her work as a midwife almost 20 years after her death.

Joyce Cook, from Thornton, was awarded a Kate Granger Compassionate Care Award as part of celebrations for NHS 70 at an event in Manchester.

Joyce worked at Bradford Royal Infirmary for almost 30 years as a sister in A&E and later as a midwife. She died of cancer aged 51 in 1999.

Her daughter Rosie Preston-Cook from Haworth (pictured with a photo of her mum) wrote a blog about her work for the NHS 70 celebrations in July describing the work she did which was seen by the organisers of the award.

Rosie said: "My mother was hugely passionate about the NHS and totally loved her job, both as a nurse and later as a midwife.

"We are so proud of her and the work that she did and for it to be recognised after her death just means the world to me, my Dad and my two brothers.

"She would have been thrilled to have won this award; although would probably have said what she did is what many nurses and midwives do as a matter of course."

The Kate Granger Awards for Compassionate Care are named after Dr Kate Granger, who passed away in 2016.

She worked to raise awareness around compassion in the NHS through her #hellomynameis social media campaign.
