CALLS for a new visa for qualified international students to stay in the UK to work in skilled jobs after graduation have been backed by the University of Bradford.

The visa would allow a wide range of employers to benefit from access to skilled graduates from all over the world.

The University says this would make it and the Bradford district a more attractive destination for international students, and boost the local economy.

Bradford currently has almost 1,000 international students from more than 150 countries studying at the university.

Recent studies have shown international students contribute £20 billion to the UK economy every year with the figure for Yorkshire standing at £1.59 billion.

Mark Garratt, director of external affairs, said: “The University of Bradford strongly supports this proposal, which we believe is an essential step to make Bradford more attractive to the international students and graduates who make such a vital contribution to our community and economy.

"In an increasingly globalised world, we know also that these students and graduates bring not only investment, but skills and perspectives which are valued by UK students and local employers.

"Sending out a strong message that Bradford is a welcoming city, which is open to global talent, makes sense for everyone."

The new visa proposal would mean universities can sponsor graduates to search for work in the UK for up to two years, a more flexible system than exists currently.
