A GOOD Samaritan described the moment he rushed to the aid of a man who had been attacked with a knife.

Michael Jahns told Basildon Crown Court he heard screaming before someone shouted “I’m going to kill you” causing him to rush off his boat at Smallgains Marina on Canvey earlier this year.

He appeared via video link from his home in Poland on day two of the trial of Gary Cogman who is charged with grievously wounding his former friend Matthew Storer during a row.

Mr Jahns said: “There was a commotion and some people were screaming and shouting at each other and I went out to see what was happening.

“I could see three males and one female next to a boat.

“One man was holding a knife and was being aggressive towards the other man. There was a couple on the boat next to where it was happening and they were trying to make the man with the knife go away.

“I learned afterwards the person holding the knife and being aggressive was Gary.”

Mr Jahns told the court he was considering intervening until it looked like Cogman was walking away so he returned to his boat only to hear the commotion again.

“Within minutes, more shouting occurred and someone shouted ‘I am going to kill you’ so I went back out and saw the situation was developing.”

Mr Jahns said Cogman refused to leave despite attempts by onlookers to calm him down before telling the court Mr Storer was unusually calm.

“I thought it was strange how unaggressive he was. He didn’t seem to try and defend himself in any way or attack Gary back or even look for cover.

“At one point he turned his back to Gary and tried to walk away.”

Despite not being able to recall seeing any actual stabbing take place, the court heard the next thing Mr Jahns saw was Gary walking away but did not know what had happened to Mr Storer.

“I was concerned about Matt so I ran out and realised he was lying in the mud because there was only water at high tide.

“He was covered in blood so I went back to my boat to get a first aid kit and then cleaned his wounds before I started dressing them.

“Matt was in a state of shock. He had climbed on the jetty and when I got back to him he was sitting on it.

“He had quite a few surface knife wounds and they were bleeding quite a lot and covered in mud so I was worried about infection.

“One on his forearm was particularly deep and one on his back was quite deep as well.”

Cogman denies one charge of wounding with intent and the trial continues.
