PLANS to turn an empty takeaway into a bar have been refused by Bradford Council.

Planning officers said the application, which would see the former Adam's takeaway on Saltaire Road converted into a bar called The Peacock Lounge, did not include enough detail for them to approve the scheme.

If approved, the bar would have served alcohol until midnight and be allowed to host live music until 11pm.

The unit is on one of the main routes between Shipley and Saltaire, and has residential accomodation above it.

A new bar and live music venue, Buskers' Bar, recently opened a few doors down from the unit, and the nearby Shipley Pride pub is soon to reopen as the Beehive.

A planning report into the proposed new business said that a bar use would be acceptable, and "add to the variety" of the area.

It added: "It is acknowledged that this area is not performing well in the current economic climate and that there is little retail activity along this stretch of Saltaire Road: this is demonstrated by the fact that only one unit, No 50 Saltaire Road is in use as a shop - Yorkshire Appliance Centre - a small electrical appliance showroom.

"There are a number of restaurants in the vicinity of the site and the establishment of a new public house could complement and add to the variety of premises on offer for visiting members of the public and the local community. "

But officers pointed out that there was not an acoustic report submitted with the plans. They said this was needed, as there were two flats above the planned bar. They added: "The impact of the proposed use on the occupants of the upper floor flats in, and adjacent to, the building cannot be fully assessed."
