CHARITIES which do lasting work in the community across the Bradford district are being encouraged to apply for a grant from the Telegraph & Argus’ charitable arm.

The Gannett Foundation, operated by the US company Gannett, parent company of the T&A, is looking for deserving candidates to come forward to receive cash to help provide services in the district.

Charities can focus on a variety of issues, from helping disadvantaged or disabled people, to working with young people, environmental conservation and boosting the economy

Among the recipients last year, the Gannet Foundation helped to part-fund two boats for Bradford Amateur Rowing Club.

Other good causes which have received a helping hand from the Foundation in recent years, include the University of Bradford’s Cancer Research Unit.

As part of a £1 million appeal to buy a new spectrometer, the T&A handed over a cheque for £20,000 to the unit.

The new piece of equipment, which arrived at the university at the end of 2015, is being used by scientists to look into how to diagnose breast cancer more quickly.

A grant from the foundation also helped renovate a kitchen run by the Cellar Trust, a charity that supports people with mental health problems across the Bradford district to move forward in their recovery and live independent, fulfilling lives.

The Foundation supports registered charities with projects which take a creative approach to fundamental issues such as neighbourhood improvements, local problem-solving, economic development, youth enterprise, sport and healthy living, assistance to disadvantaged or disabled people, care of the elderly, environmental conservation, and educational or cultural enrichment.

A spokesman said: “We value projects that bring lasting benefits to communities served by our local newspapers and websites.

“We entertain applications of any size or ambition. Typically, our grants are modest sums for practical projects, but we will consider awards to larger projects which deserve our backing.”

Decisions about funding will be made by the trustees based on the evidence submitted.

Applications must be submitted on the approved application form, which can be downloaded at https://www.thetelegraphandargus.co.uk/gannettgrants/

The form and supporting document should be sent to will.kilner@nqyne.co.uk. Submissions on paper must be sent to Bradford Telegraph & Argus, Drake Street, Hall Ings, Bradford BD1 1JR. Applications must arrive by 5pm on Monday, October 8.
